Musical Director – D. Huw Morgan
Huw was born and raised in Merthyr Tydfil. He plays the Bass Trombone, Tuba, Piano, Organ and Percussion, as well as being an accomplished singer. He combines a varied career in the music profession and as a university and college music lecturer. He has performed extensively as a conductor and performer throughout Europe and the United States in orchestras, brass bands and choirs. Huw also writes and arranges music in a wide variety of idioms and has many published works.
Additionally, Huw co-founded, managed and performed with Only Men Aloud! for many years. Moreover, he has worked under conductors such as Sir Andrew Davies, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Karl Jenkins, Sir Mark Elder and David Charles Abell. As a conductor and musical director, Huw has had the opportunity to work in a variety of contexts from musical theatre to oratorio and from brass bands to rock concerts. More recent projects have included Dolly Parton’s ‘9 To 5 The Musical’, ‘We Will Rock You’ by Queen and Ben Elton, Scrooge – The Musical, Handel’s Messiah, and a tribute evenings to the Sex Pistols, Metallica and Pink Floyd! He has conducted in contrasting venues such as the Principality Stadium, Millennium Centre and St David’s Hall, Cardiff, the Brangwyn Hall and Liberty Stadium, Swansea, Symphony Hall, Birmingham and the Royal Albert Hall, London.
Huw lectures on a music performance and production degree course through the University of Wales, and is a course coordinator at the Music Academy of Neath Port Talbot College. He combines this with being tutor in charge of the Merthyr Tydfil Youth Orchestra.
Finally, Huw recognises what a special body of men Côr Meibion Maesteg are. They always give 100% commitment to the choir, to the music they perform and to the many charities they support. The musical standards they set and the support they give to the local community and further afield is phenomenal.
